The Laurelwood Church of Christ began in April of 1982, with twelve people meeting in a home. The church was envisioned more than ten years earlier by the Pitman Church of Christ, as they made plans to plant three new congregations in the coming decade. The Pitman church was aided by the Homewood Church of Christ in Birmingham, Alabama, which provided funding and ongoing support and guidance.
Our church first met in Gloucester Township, in the home of Glynn and Susan Durham. Glynn was Laurelwood’s first minister. Six months later, in October of 1982, the group began meeting in rented facilities at the YWCA in Stratford. In October 1985 the Laurelwood congregation began meeting at Osage Elementary School in Voorhees. Here the congregation grew, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
In 1991, Laurelwood welcomed its second minister, Chet Churchill, and his wife Kathy. The congregation continued to serve the community and each other, but also began constructing a meeting place on property the church had acquired on Somerdale Road in Gloucester Township. Through a long path of faith, groundbreaking on the property was held in 1996. With much labor by members and the providence of God, the facility was completed, and the first service was held in March of 1997.
In January 2002, Daniel Oden began serving as interim minister, with his wife Helen and their family. In May 2002, Daniel agreed to serve as minister for a three-year period. Our congregation continued through a period of attrition and changes, but remained alive and active with a group of people dedicated to God’s work. During this period a number of community outreach programs were established, as well as special programs for women, parents, and youth.
In January 2006, Laurelwood welcomes our fourth minister, Durston Dove. Durston and his wife Jodi bring a wealth of insights and experience to help further the kingdom of God.
With dedicated, faithful leaders and loving members, our church is developing a vision for the future, as we strive to be God's people.
