Russsian comedian Yakov Smirnoff in America on Six Rubles a Day wrote: I was not prepared for the incredible variety of products available in American grocery stores. While on my first shopping trip I saw powdered milk. You just add water an you get milk. Then I saw powdered orange juice. Just add water and you get orange juice. Then I saw baby powder. I thought to myself, "What a country!" Some Christians leave the impression that if you just add water to a sinner you get a Christian. Have a baby sprinkled and the child is saved, or get an adult immersed and he or she is on the road to Heaven. But baptism is not a magic potion; it is not an automatic ticket to eternal life. In fact, baptism is nothing more than getting wet if it isn't a genuine expression of belief and repentance. Some have gone to the opposite extreme and treated baptism almost as a meaningless ordinance - something nice for a believer to do when it's convenient, but not really very significant in God's plan. Why did Jesus walk 50 miles to the be baptized by John in the Jordan River? John's baptism was a baptism of repentance, and Jesus was perfect. No wonder John tried to deter him, saying "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" (Matthew 3:14) For sinners such as I, baptism into Christ is an expression of repentance and an occasion of cleansing. (Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21) Dr. Beufrd Bryant once suggested, "The baptistery is a tomb and a womb - a tomb where we die to this world and a womb where we are born into God's kingdom." The sinless Christ insisted on being baptized "to fulfill all righteousness." (Matthew 3:15) By being baptized, Jesus bore witness to the importance of baptism. He set an example for us to follow. He demonstrated humble obedience to the Father. But Jesus' baptism also served as a benchmark of change. It bore witness to a transition that was taking place in his life. Up to this point, it's likely he had been supporting his family by working as a carpenter. He had performed no miracle, preached no official sermon. Now it was the time for him to announce a transition. The carpenter's tools were put aside. He was ready to begin his ministry as a special ambassador from heaven (Luke 3:21-23). John did not introduce him as the carpenter from Nazareth, but as the "The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." (John 1:29) Immediately after Jesus' baptism, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and the voice of God thundered, "This is my son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:17) From this point on, Jesus' life was never the same. Baptism alone isn't a magic formula that automatically forgives sin. But when it is the expression of a believing, repentant, obedient heart, it serves as a beautiful testimony to the world that. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Cor. 5:17) Bob Russell, Southeast Christian Church via Tabernacle church of Christ Bulletin
